Jonathan's Hot Take:

Downcut spiral bits are my most used bit when I want a clean edge on the tool-side of my stock.

They're great for stopped mortises, grooves, and dados — and also for hogging out material on the CNC.

These bits provide the HIGHEST VALUE because the Astra Coating makes them last at least 2-4x longer than uncoated bits. This is one of those times that spending a little more upfront saves you a lot of money down the line.

Spiral bits perform 100x better and 100x longer than straight bits. I recommend staying away from straight bits in general, because they dull so much faster and their aggressive cutting profile can be much less safe.

Solid carbide down cut 2 flute router bit with 1″ length of cut. The flutes are designed to push the chips downward and they also help with fraying and chipping on your workpiece. This tool work really well for wood and even on plastics and aluminum. The cutting tip diameter is 1/4″ and the length of cut is 1 inch. Formerly known as 420-DNC250.

What is a DownCut bit?

With a DownCut bit, the advantage is that it’s pushing down on the piece you’re working on, plus it cleanly cuts the top surface. The tradeoff is the waste is pushed back into the cut area instead of being ejected, so we recommend not to cut dados or drill holes with a downcut. These bits are also made to be ran slower – both in revolution or RPM of the bit, and also in spindle movement. That’s because the waste often has nowhere to go, so it is continually being chopped by the sharp flutes.

1/4" Down-Cut Astra Coated Spiral Bit

This is an outstanding router bit. Cuts quickly and cleanly, as do all of these Astra Coated bits.I expect it to last a long time. Well worth the investment--and it is an investment.
