3 Uses for the Katz-Moses Dovetail Jig — that Aren’t Dovetails (Quick Tip)

3 Uses for the Katz-Moses Dovetail Jig — that Aren’t Dovetails (Quick Tip)

The Katz-Moses Magnetic Dovetail Jig is a huge help for cutting accurate dovetails (as the name implies). But dovetails aren’t all it’s good for.

Because of the magnetized 90° crosscut face, it becomes a useful jig for other hand tool operations.

Here are a few examples:

1. SQUARE CROSSCUTS WITH A HAND SAW

Need a quick 90° crosscut? Grab your hand saw and a Katz-Moses Magnetic Dovetail Jig.

With your saw against the 90° face and the stem flush against the edge of the board, cutting square is a cinch…

And you can (maybe) even skip the shooting board.

2. SHOULDERED JOINERY WITH A HAND SAW

Half laps, tenons, and bridle joints are all made with 90° cuts. And getting those cuts as close to perfectly square as possible is critical for a joint that fits well.

Use the Katz-Moses Magnetic Dovetail Jig to make sawing those shoulders a whole lot easier.

If you’re working with a thin board, you can even clamp a matching piece on the edge to give the Dovetail Jig a better reference face.

It works equally well for rips and crosscuts — and any kind of hand saw.

3. 90° CHISEL GUIDE

using a katz-moses magnetic dovetail jig as a chisel guide

When you're finishing the walls of a mortise or paring down joinery, the closer to 90° you keep your chisel the better.

Place the cutting edge of the chisel in your marking knife line, flip the dovetail jig upside down, and slide the 90° side up to the chisel.

The magnets will hold the chisel at exactly 90°, leaving you free to chop away.

I tried to figure out how to use this jig to cut compound angled dovetails and couldn’t. Maybe there is a way but I had to cut them without the use of a jig.
